Joyscrolling: What If Social Media Left You Feeling Better?
We all know what doomscrolling feels like.
You open your phone for a minute. Before you know it, you've spent far longer than you planned scrolling through bad news, arguments, outrage, and things you never even intended to see.
You put the phone down, but somehow you feel worse than when you picked it up.
But what if scrolling could work the other way?
What if your feed left you with more hope than when you opened it?
What Is Joyscrolling?
Joyscrolling is a simple idea: being more intentional about seeking, sharing, and engaging with things online that bring joy, encouragement, gratitude, connection, and hope.
That doesn't mean ignoring difficult things or pretending everything is fine.
It means remembering that negativity doesn't have to be the only thing that gets our attention.
There is still good happening in the world.
There are people helping one another. Communities coming together. Friends encouraging friends. Stories of generosity, faith, creativity, healing, and hope.
Sometimes we just have to make room to notice them.
Your Feed Is Shaped by What You Give Your Attention To
Every scroll is a choice, even when it doesn't feel like one.
What we follow, watch, share, and engage with influences what we see more often. Over time, those choices can shape the digital environment we experience every day.
So maybe it's worth asking:
What am I giving my attention to?
Follow people who encourage you.
Share something that might brighten someone's day.
Leave a thoughtful comment.
Spend time with content that helps you learn, reflect, laugh, pray, or remember what matters.
Small choices can begin to change the way we experience the internet.
Joy Can Be Something We Share
For Christians, there is another opportunity here.
We aren't limited to consuming what the internet gives us. We can contribute something different to it.
A message of encouragement. A moment of kindness. A reminder that someone is seen. A story that points toward something good.
And sometimes, a simple message of hope can reach someone at exactly the right moment.
At Soma Digital, that's part of what we believe digital ministry can be.
Not adding more noise to the internet, but creating moments that help people pause, connect, and encounter the hope of Christ.
Maybe the next time you find yourself scrolling, ask one simple question:
Is this helping me find hope, or taking it away?
And perhaps even more importantly:
What am I putting into someone else's feed today?
